Wars are always cruel. Even justified wars are filled with names, more and more names. We learn the names of battles, the names of weapons, but most of all, we learn the names of soldiers. Before the war, these young men were anonymous; only their loved ones and friends knew them. Now, although they never asked for such morbid celebrity, the public knows their names, their dreams, their stories, and the details of their deaths.

Shabbat, 11:00 a.m. Once again a new reality begins, and  no one knows how it will end. A week ago, Israel was dealing with the economic crisis and yet another terrible drought. And now we have to put everything aside and focus on a war, yet another war.  The cost of the war is between one hundred to two hundred million shekels a day. But the real price is the hundreds of thousands of Israelis exposed to rockets, to life-threatening danger. Life has stopped for them—no school, no home, no safe room. We in Israel knew this attack was only a matter of time, and when it began, we understood it wouldn’t be easy.
